California Haze
Description
THE GENETICS
As with many strains available on the market, it is almost impossible to trace the exact origin of California Haze, of which the only certainty is that it originated in the hills of California's Bay Area. The current product is the result of many years of research into high-CBD plants, whose first crosses date back as far as the early 1960s. Legend has it that two brothers — the “Haze Brothers” — created a hybrid using some seeds entirely at random, unknowingly giving rise to one of the most popular and widespread strains in cannabis history. California Haze derives from a cross between Sour Diesel and a classic Haze plant, subsequently refined with the addition of Mexican ruderalis genetics to complete the autoflowering mix. In its CBD version, this legendary strain preserves its sweet, fruity aromatic character, offering a high cannabidiol concentration with a THC content within legal limits.
THE APPEARANCE
California Haze has medium-to-large buds, due to a strong concentration of flowers at the top of the plants and the cultivation method used. The buds are covered with a thick coat of bright red pistils and trichomes that give the flowers, and consequently the whole plant, their characteristic colour. The buds are resinous and compact, with distinctive highlights ranging from classic red to vivid purple in some flowers. This is one of the few strains available in different sizes: both normal-sized and small buds can be found, the latter obtained by hand-sieving the plant's finest flowers to produce consistent batches approximately 1 cm in diameter. California Haze is highly appreciated for its ease of use and the uniform quality of all its buds.
AROMA
California Haze's most loved characteristics are undoubtedly its aroma and delicate taste. It is no exaggeration to describe it as a rainbow of sensations, capable of sweetening and softening the palate with its olfactory complexity. The aroma is intense, soft and pleasant, with hints of sweet fruits such as strawberry and peach, accompanied by an aftertaste reminiscent of candyfloss. When thinking of California Haze, imagine a true fruit sweet: sweet, enveloping and persistent, with an aromatic lightness that makes it accessible and pleasant even to palates less accustomed to the intense scents of cannabis. Its aromatic persistence is long, leaving a fresh, sugary aftertaste that remains pleasant for a long time.
ORIGIN AND CULTIVATION
This strain has been successfully grown in Europe for around seven years, since the emergence of CBD cultivation. The company that first began growing it is considered one of the leaders in indoor cultivation. The production facility is located in the hills and uses modern ventilation and irrigation techniques that make it one of the most sustainable and advanced growing operations, certified for organic production without pesticides or chemical fertilisers. California Haze is grown aeroponically, an advanced technique that allows plants to grow without water or soil by misting essential nutrients directly onto the roots. By eliminating the plants' exposure to pests and pathogens, this method achieves maximum plant wellbeing and consequently supports their development. The buds are selected and trimmed by hand to avoid damaging their integrity.
THE ORIGINS
California Haze has its roots in California's Bay Area in the 1960s, when the legendary Haze Brothers began experimenting with crosses between sativa varieties from around the world — Colombia, Mexico, southern India and Thailand — growing their seeds in the sunny hills of Santa Cruz. The result was a series of long-flowering sativa strains with intense, complex aromas that immediately became popular in the local scene. From northern California it reached the Netherlands in the 1980s, where breeders such as Nevil Schoenmakers further refined it for European climates, soon spreading it across Europe. Growing this strain is not for everyone: many growers dislike it because of its long flowering times and difficulty adapting to climates with little sunshine. However, in the hands of the right growers and with suitable techniques, California Haze expresses its full aromatic potential, producing flowers of exceptional quality appreciated worldwide.
